Writing Challenge Day 6

So nice to meet you

The palm of my hand stroked your black and white spots
Your heart rapidly beats inside your chest
Your brown eyes met mine
This is what it feels like when it’s meant to be
So nice to meet you, I am your best friend

Inseparable and completely in tune
Walks, swimming and play
You and me every day

A new arrival, your eyes met hers
It was love at first sight instantly
So nice to meet you, I am your best friend
Rides in the car, rockpools and parks
Always by our side, never too far

Another sibling I want you to meet
Tail wagging as your eyes connect
Promptly smitten the pair of you
So nice to meet you, I am your best friend
Tricks, balls and sprinklers
We laugh until it hurts

Never alone when you are with me
As things get tough, you are always there
with wags, nuzzles and a lovingly stare

A bump and a fall, didn’t see you there
Slowly our world disappeared for you
Months of mourning for the loss of your sight
Touch replaced visual signs

Before evening snuggles
You’ld map out our place
Often we’d find you stuck somehwere
Nothing got moved to keep you safe
Walks got shorter and so did your pace
A couple of stumbles and then a fall
No more responses when you were called

My heart broke inside, it hurt so much
Cancelled work to stay close to you
To be the friend you were to me
The tears I cried too many to count

No more walks, the wagging stopped
Only your loyalty is what kept you here
No way to tell me it was time to go
More tears of sadness and a grieving heart

We pulled together and made a plan
A final day to remember you by
A last car ride and a walk on the beach
A photo, a footprint and a lock of your hair
A bath, a brush and a meal kids prepared
A slide show of memories, you were always there

As your head lay on my lap, we said our goodbyes
The palm of my hand stroked your black and white spots
Your heart slowed down until it stopped
It was so nice to meet you, our very best friend
There were no tears of sadness
Only feelings of calm, love and peace

In loving memory of Maggie, our very best friend
